Autumn is finally coming, its one of my favourite seasons. The weather isn't to hot, not to cold. The light isn't to bright, not to dull and you are surrounded by the beautiful browns, reds, and oranges from the leaves around you that have fallen from the tree's. There is nothing I love more than going for a nice autumn walk.
This is exactly what me and Lily decided to do last week. I wanted to make the walk a little more interesting and so I got Lily to bring out her bucket. Its now Conker season and lately i've noticed that all the conkers are falling from the horse chestnut tree's and its the perfect time to go out and collect some. You have to be fast though. This is something I know a lot of people love to do and even when me and Lily got out to the front of our building where there are usually loads, there wasn't any. In fact if I look out of my window this very second I can see a lady with a carrier bag collecting them.
We set off out and Lily soon got the hang of collecting them and knew exactly what we were looking for. I showed her the first one and and popped it into her bucket, I then pointed out another and this time she popped it into her bucket. Soon enough I didn't need to show her and she would be rooting in the leaves to see what she could find.
One of the things Lily loves doing is counting them, so we decided to take a break and sit down and see how many we had.
We had about 15 - 20 conkers if I remember rightly. We were also very lucky to find one that had not come out of its shell yet. The shell was really spiky and Lily loved the look of it. I was careful that it wasn't going to hurt her fingers though and it wouldn't. They are perfectly fine to pick up.
We wanted to find a few more cokers before we were finished for the day so we walked a little further. We collected a few more in the bucket and then sat down to count again. We ended up with 29 conkers and these all came home with us in the bucket. (not sure what to do with them now, I must get my thinking cap on.)
Have you ever been conker picking? If you decide to go out and do it then please come back and let me know how many you find.

I still love conkers! we used to play 'conkers' at school with conkers on strings
ReplyDelete29 sounds like an impressive haul on the conker front, I've been meaning to do some conker activities here on the farm too. Lily looks like she had a wonderful time exploring the ground hunting for the hidden treasures, you're lucky to find so many that hadn't been collected. It's so sweet to see Lily sat on the step counting her conkers, a fab way to get learning into a simple activity.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.
