Its time for my monthly book round up again. Each month I write about new books that I have introduced to Lily at bedtime and what we think of them. We always read around 4-5 books a night and most nights we end up reading the same ones. I find reading the same books helps Lily relax and she does grow fond of the stories each month and gets excited when I get them out to read each night.
You can read all our other monthly roundups here.
So here are our August choice of books.
1. Pat-a-Cake Baby by Joyce Dunbar
At first I didn't really care for this book to much. I found it difficult to read as the words are laid out on the page all randomly and it just seemed like a lot of words all jumbled up together. For example Hulla-Baloony-Moon time. Im still not sure what that actually means. BUT Lily really loved this story and would ask for it by saying baby baby baby. I will then say that actually after reading for a whole month solid, the book did grow on me and as I started to be able to read it a little more fluently, it sounded much better and was actually quite a fun book to read. The book itself is lovely with its beautiful colourful illustrations done by Polly Dunbar, and the front of the book even has sparkles on which every child would love. I won this book from a Toppsta giveaway but have also seen it in plenty of the high street book stores.
2. Bing - Messy Cake
Lily is still a massive Bing fan and so when I picked this book up from Morrisons we just had to get reading it straight away. It would always be the first book we would read on the night as Lily would get very excited about it and so I would prefer to keep her calm the closer it gets to bedtime. In this Bing book its all about Bing baking a cake for a cake party but accidents happen and it accidentally gets dropped onto the table and messy. But it has a great moral that in the end its ok that the cake was all messy looking because you can still eat it all up.

3. Owl Babies by Martin Waddell
I picked this book up in Waterstones because lately owls are Lily's favourite animal. I love this story. Its a really sweet story about 3 baby owls who's mother has to leave them to go and get food. They wake up and mummy is gone and they all wonder where. The story plays out and they get more and more worried about their mummy. But then they are all relieved when she flies home to them and they have there mummy back. I think that this would be a great story for children who are just about to be left at nursery and so are unsure if there mummy will be coming back. Lily loved this story and it was such a nice calm one for bedtime and we would usually read this one last. She also was so sweet and kept trying to feed her bottle of milk to each owl. I think this was my favourite to read from this months selection.
4. Kitty Princess and the Fantastic Frog by Trevor Dickinson
I grabbed this book for £1 from a charity shop and Im so glad I did. I wasn't sure how much Lily would enjoy this story or if it would be any good, but inside the book is brilliantly colourful which attracted me to buy it. Lily really did enjoy this story and would sit nice and quietly listening to it. She would excitedly ask me questions about what she saw in the book and would point out some of the objects and toys she saw in the story. The story is about a princess kitty who is really bored of the huge amount of toys she has. Her fairy godmouse encourages her to play with her ball, but she soon gets bored of that. Then she meets frog and frog manages to make fun out of anything that kitty gets bored of. But she doesn't want to play with him. In the end the kitty and frog make friends and play together. I think the moral to the story is that you can make anything old fun and new again and that also playing with friends is better than playing alone. If you ever spot this book out and about I would recommend it.
Lily didn't really have a favourite book this time round and loved them all.

ReplyDeleteOwl babies sounds great too
ReplyDeleteOwl babies has been a favourite of mine for years and I'm pleased both my little people love it as much as me. We recently got the messy cake book too as they are huge Bing fans :) Never heard of the other two, but I do love the sound of the Kitty Princess and the Fantastic Frog. My eldest needs to appreciate his mountain of toys more
ReplyDeleteoh the owl babies is fantastic and another of the books I love. We also go book hunting in charity shops. There can be some real gems in there. Thanks for linking up to #KLTR
ReplyDeleteOh I keep meaning to get Owl Babies actually. Also totally love a charity shop find! Thanks for linking up to #kltr.
ReplyDeleteOwl Babies :- Sounds lovely. There are times when Mum may need to leave a little one in the care of another. As you mention in the blog, maybe Nursery. Mum loves the child and plans to return and collect the child later. Children seems to have little - no real understanding / conception of time or the passage of time. Yet we want them to know that they are loved, and Mum will return for the child. Have known some to leave a personal item with the child, as may help the child accept that Mum will return for item and child. So book seems good for little ones.
